Women in boiler suit with AR/VR headset

Course Summary

This online course will provide participants with a robust understanding of manufacturing concepts and the link between modern digital manufacturing technologies and continuous improvement in production environments.

More specifically, this course will introduce participants to the fundamental principles of lean manufacturing, equipping you with knowledge and skills to support continuous improvement activities within your organisation.

This course goes beyond theory, offering a hands-on experience through virtual reality (VR) simulations, providing invaluable insights into the practical application of lean manufacturing concepts.

This course has VR exercises that require a VR headset capable of running Steam VR. While not mandatory for course completion, engaging in the VR exercises will enhance your learning experience.

The following topics will be covered in this course:

  1. Introduction to manufacturing
  2. Fundamentals of lean manufacturing
  3. Modern digital manufacturing technologies
  4. Introduction to a virtual factory simulation using VR
  5. Application of lean manufacturing through VR
  6. Trends and the future of manufacturing

The learning outcomes for this course are as follows:

  • Explore the fundamentals of manufacturing processes and the key drivers of productivity in today's dynamic industry landscape.
  • Understand core lean manufacturing principles such as customer value and waste, measurement, root cause analysis, standardisation, and skills & workforce development.
  • Explore the latest technologies shaping Digital Manufacturing, including eXtended reality, internet of things (IoT), collaborative robots (cobots), and computer vision.
  • Debunk common misconceptions surrounding Digital Manufacturing and stay ahead of the curve by discovering future trends and developments in the field.
  • Immerse yourself in a virtual reality experience that guides you through a manufacturing process, allowing you to apply lean manufacturing concepts in a practical and interactive manner.

This course is aimed at anyone interested in production and engineering environment optimisation and those interested in digital manufacturing technologies, particularly VR.

This course represents the culmination of the ATI/Innovate UK-funded project Connected Reconfigurable Factory (COREF), led by Thales in collaboration with the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland. Together, we have worked to expand the reach of this project by scaling the learning experience across the nation through our e-learning platform and VR experience.
