Manufacturing net-zero series

This event has now ended. You can rewatch the webinar below, or visit our YouTube channel for all other webinars.

The future's green but how are we going to make it?

This month we explore the role of the manufacturing industry in the journey towards net zero.

Join us to learn about how modern high-value manufacturing is going to help make products for a greener world using less material, less energy, and less waste, and how you can get involved.

This event series will run from Wednesday 29 September - Tuesday 26 October 2021.

Date: Wednesday 29 September 2021

Time: 11.00 - 12.00

From 3d printing to advances in forging and forming, near net shape manufacturing technologies can radically reduce materials waste and enhance efficiency.

During this session, you’ll hear from our team of experts as we explore these technologies in more detail, including real-life case studies and what they can do for you.

The race to net-zero offers an opportunity to accelerate innovation and economic growth through the decarbonisation of transport and energy. Join us to discuss the engineering and manufacturing capabilities and skills required within Scottish and UK supply chains to support the drive towards electrification.

We’ll cover power electronics, machines, and drives while highlighting the successes of the Future Electrical Machines Manufacturing Hub in the lightweighting and sustainable manufacture of electrical machines.

We’ll also look at the unique capability development at NMIS to develop superconducting and cryogenic propulsion systems, and the support available for your business at NMIS and DER-IC Scotland to explore innovative ideas and bring novel electrification technologies and systems to life.

From exploring recycling options for reusable facemasks to discovering more sustainable alternatives to carbon fibre, and providing routes for the remanufacturing of forging dies, here we delve into how we are embracing the circular economy through R&D, and how you can get involved too.

You’ll hear from the team at our Lightweight Manufacturing Centre who are facing issues with materials sustainability head-on, alongside engineers from within the NMIS Digital Factory who are using cutting edge technologies to remanufacture and remake instead of scrapping products and starting again.

Upskilling our current and future workforce is essential for supporting manufacturers on their net-zero journey, while also providing new opportunities for job seekers within rising industries.

Sit down with NMIS Head of Skills Capability, Jim Hannigan and the team to ask questions and learn more about the support being offered through the NMIS Manufacturing Skills Academy, including fully funded CPD courses and paid graduate training, along with their views on how to attract and keep the best talent, or future proof your own career.

Heat treatments are a necessary but highly energy-intensive part of many manufacturing processes.

Here we look at vibratory stress relief (VSR) a potentially groundbreaking new heat treatment alternative that could radically reduce energy requirements, while also exploring changes you can implement right now to make traditional treatment methods more efficient and effective.

The Materials and Residual Stress team from the AFRC will also discuss how to examine whether the heat treatment stage of various manufacturing processes is even really required, looking at factors such as correct temperature and time.
